My journey to Unity began during the summer of 1983—at a newsstand located in Chicago’s Century Mall. Having been “laid off” from my dream advertising job at Chicago’s Leo Burnet Company, I was more than a little discouraged as I entered the store to pick up the latest issue of Advertising Age (for the latest array of classifieds).

Suddenly, out of nowhere, an issue of Science of Mind magazine fell at my feet. As I picked it up to return it to a shelf, I noticed the headlines promised new ways of looking at my world. I was intrigued. This led me to Chicago’s First Church of Religious Science. I loved attending classes because they began to address some of the “life questions” I had sought.

Fast forward six years, as I moved to the Washington area, I began visiting ‘New Thought’ congregations and found myself drawn to Unity of Fairfax. I attended Unity of Fairfax (as a frequent visitor) from the early 1990s until I moved to Rockville, Maryland in 2001.

The journey continued in Maryland, at Unity of Gaithersburg. It started with a class: The 4Ts of Prosperity. As I learned more about contributing Time, Talent, and Treasure, [and Testimony], I was led to an array of wonderful volunteer experiences—I taught Sunday School, participated in special events and projects (such as the annual Thanksgiving Dinner, Angel Tree gift collection and wrapping, workshops, and the Nominating Committee).  These experiences were pivotal because they taught me that sharing my time and talent was not only enjoyable, but resulted in a deep sense of ownership and belonging.

So, when I moved back to Northern Virginia in 2010, it was only natural to return to Unity of Fairfax and begin participating, immediately. It felt like “home.” I have participated in a range of volunteer activities at Unity of Fairfax, but the most significant of these have been working with the inception of the Mildred Park Society and my service on Unity of Fairfax’s Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2018.
