Tao Te Ching - Chapter 46

Chapter 46

When a country is in harmony with the Tao,
the factories make trucks and tractors.
When a country goes counter to the Tao,
warheads are stockpiled outside the cities.

There is no greater illusion than fear,
no greater wrong than preparing to defend yourself,
no greater misfortune than having an enemy.

Whoever can see through all fear
will always be safe.

Hope is as hollow as fear.

What does it mean that hope is as hollow as fear?
Hope and fear are both phantoms
that arise from thinking of the self.
When we no longer think of the self as self,
what do we have to fear?

See the world as yourself.
Have faith in the way things are.
Love the world as your self,
then you can care for all things,

Commentary

Whoever can see through all fear:

This is the only real defense.

President Roosevelt said, " We have nothing to fear but fear itself."

I would say, "Not even that."
