Ed Merritt

Treasurer

Ed hails from a small town in western North Carolina and, as it turns out, is the same age as this church (65 in '21).  After earning a B.A. from Wesleyan University in the College of Social Studies, he settled in this area, and about 15 years ago found a spiritual home here at Unity.  Prior to his serving on the Board, he previously participated in our spiritual community as a prayer chaplain, as a music-maker some Sundays, as an occasional gardener with Earth Care and lately as a participant in the Comunidad Hispana group.

The last 16 years of his work life have been spent as the primary owner and operator of a small business that provides educational services to high school students (which, coincidentally, runs on an operating budget similar in size to Unity’s).  Ed says he hopes to use some of the perspectives and lessons from navigating a small business through changing times in his role on the board.  These include how to engage effectively with the changing realities of a situation while staying inspired by and grounded in the organization's mission, and how to be a good colleague.
