When the psalmist wrote in Psalm 118:24 "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it," I don't think he (or she!) had in mind April Fool's Day. Yet here it is, April 1st and the pranks are sure to abound. Is there a spiritual value to this day of pitfalls and practical jokes? Most certainly - April Fool's Day reminds us not too take ourselves so seriously. Being able to laugh at ourselves is a true gift we can give ourselves. It's served me in good stead, that's for sure!
Of course we have serious issues to deal with in life. There's no denying that; but April Fool's Day provides us with a way to "blow off steam" or cope - laughter. Science has shown that laughter releases a string of hormones and brain chemicals that reduce stress and boost our immune systems. Unity, and New Thought in general, has long known that the mind and the body are intimately interconnected, so I've always wondered why we don't promote the spiritual - and physical - value of April Fool's Day more diligently. Maybe I should put that on my to-do list...
And my to-do list is growing. Today is my first official day as Senior Minister at Unity of Fairfax, and I had to chuckle when I realized my position commences on April Fool's Day. Perhaps the Universe is giving me - and all of us - a message: This is the day the Lord (spiritual law and divine order) has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!
May you be blessed in all ways, always!
