Volunteer of the Month - January 2012
The volunteer of the month for January 2012 is the wonderful Joanna Burroughs
Joanna grew up locally in Arlington Virginia and attended Georgetown University achieving a degree in Business and in Marketing. She has been attending Unity of Fairfax for 12 years.
When asked, what brought her to Unity? Joanna explains she thought it was very important to find a spiritual home for herself and especially for her daughter Tess. She thanks her friend, Gretchen Horst, for introducing her to Unity of Fairfax.
Right away Joanna started helping with the Nursery. She has done most of her volunteer work with the Youth because she believes it’s very important to have a strong Youth Ministry. She felt it was vital to give her daughter, Tess a spiritual foundation.
Joanna and Tess have a dog, a cat and a fish. She enjoys supporting not only Unity of Fairfax but other charities that assist animals such as the Animal Welfare League.
Joanna attends all of Gretchen Horst’s retreats and, when she gets away, often she visits the peace and serenity of Yogaville Virginia.
Its wonderful people like Joanna Burroughs that make Unity of Fairfax such a special place. We thank Joanna for her many many hours of volunteer work with Unity of Fairfax!

Opportunities occur year round in all Outreach projects for both one-time and on-going volunteer service. Remember, when you give out in slices you get back in loaves.

The choir brings beautiful music to our services, every second and fourth Sunday at the 11:00 service and Carole would love new choir members. The only requirement is that you love to sing! The choir rehearses Thursday evenings at 7:45 p.m. in the sanctuary.
New
Day , our 9-piece praise band, plays the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month at 11:00. Soloists, instrumentalists and guest artists
provide the music for the 9:00 contemplative services.
What is 'Connections'? The Connections Team provides opportunities for everyone at Unity of Fairfax - all ages, singles, couples and families - to meet for fun and fellowship at low cost events and supports Connections events arranged by other members.

The communications team is responsible for coordinating production of the church's Lovelight newsletter, audio/visual production including Podcasts and video DVDs, and maintenance of the Unity of Fairfax website - your ideas & issues are welcome.

Members of the Loving Hearts (Pastoral) Ministry provide loving notes to members of the congregation during times of celebration, illness, or loss.

The prayer Ministry holds in daily prayer - this congregation, its leaders, and all who have written or called with prayer requests. Prayer Team members also provide the Thought for the Day message, the labyrinth walk twice a year, and special prayer services during the year.

The retreat team creates and supports opportunities "to go apart for a while." At least three weekends a year are planned for spiritual renewal. Periodically, they offer group attendance at selected Unity Village retreats.

This vital team staffs the sound booth during Sunday services. Operations include setting up and testing microphones, operating the audio mixing/recording/duplication system, and operating the Powerpoint display equipment.

This most important team helps create smooth running services where everyone feels Welcome. Volunteers greet congregants, provide name tags, distribute bulletins, assist with seating, and collect love offerings.

The Youth Education Ministry provides support for teachers of our Youth Education Department, including the nursery, pre-school, elementary school age, UniTeens (middle school), and Y.O.U. (senior high).

EarthCare is Unity of Fairfax's ongoing activity(s) relating to the environment and related green initiatives. This ministry is the outgrowth of our initial program involving the Green Roof on MPC, and recycling and conservation issues at the church.
