Dear Unity Family,
Teen Spirit Band: The Teen Spirit Band will do a one-song performance during the 11:00 service on Sunday, May 18. They will rehearse from 10:00 to 11:00 on the 18. Instrumentalists will gather at 9:30 to go over the music. All You Need Is Love!
Prayers & Pizza: Our 3rd – 5th graders will celebrate with a class Pizza Party on Sunday, May 18 after the 11:00 service at a nearby home. But first, we’ll stop by quickly and fuel up at the . . .
Ice Cream Social for New Members: All families and friends are invited to help us welcome new members of the community at the New Member Ice Cream social just after the 11:00 service on Sunday, May 18. We’ll have tents and tables out front so you can enjoy your sunny Sunday sundae!
All Youth Ed Volunteers – Reserve the Date! Saturday, June 21 is a day to celebrate all the contributions of our volunteers with a lively, fun picnic. Our teachers, snack helpers, sponsors, assistants and other supporters have so generously shared with us their time and talents. Anyone who has contributed in any way (and we all do!) is welcome to come and join in. And we need all families to come and cheer them on and thank them. When we pause to appreciate and reflect our accomplishments, we are renewed and filled, and somehow the bigger picture all makes sense. Games, food, sports, music, entertainment, nature and community – what a celebration! More details soon!
‘Second-Hand Treasures’ Yard Sale: What recycles, reuses and prospers all at once? Gather all those attic treasures and bring them to our Unity Yard Sale! We are currently looking for the best date - plan for Sunday, June 29, rain date July 6 for an ‘after church’ yard sale from noon until 2:00 p.m. All proceeds will go toward worthy causes at Unity, such as the purchase of a peace pole for our meditation garden and couches for small-groups in the sanctuary. Please speak with Kathryn to participate in this venture!
Summer in The Garden: We are looking for some inspired individuals to share with the children and teens this summer! We have ideas for some summer curriculums, such as Jesus in the Garden, Spirit & Nature, Healing Hands, and Music of Life. With lots of arts and crafts! We welcome fun, one-time splashes, such as we have had with special guest teachers in the past: silk painting, butterfly story-dancing, a special craft idea. Please share your ideas and availability with Kathryn.
Calling All Musicians! Consider being our special guest . . . We would like to have more musical experiences for our youth, all the time, but especially this spring and summer. If you are a musician, please talk to Kathryn about stopping by to play your flute, strum, sing a song, or get your singing bowls humming. Once, twice, or more, five minutes here and there could bring much joy to us all.
Spiritual Cinema for Families? Summer might be a good time to enjoy some great films together, perhaps with some discussion afterwards. I am going to compile a list of suggested films for various age groups and am open to having a family host an evening for their child’s classroom. Could we get everyone together? Please send your favorite suggestions and ideas!
Peace Pole: We are looking for the best spot for our soon to be coming peace pole! A good date for the planting of our peace pole looks like International Day of Peace -- September 21. Stay posted for more updates as we gather our resources for this wonderful addition to our campus. A peace pole is a symbol of our vision for world peace, and will have the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages printed on its sides. You can read more about peace poles at www.worldpeace.org.
WELCOMING PINNACLE ACADEMY TO UNITY OF FAIRFAX
Please join in welcoming the new school taking up residence at Unity of Fairfax. Pinnacle Academy will open its doors to students this September, and they are actively recruiting and creating their space in the meantime. They seem eager to connect with our community!
Pinnacle Academy is generously offering several types of scholarship to Unity community families. They will offer one complete scholarship, two half-scholarships, four quarter-scholarships, and a 10% discount to all other community members. The tuition is very reasonable. Scholarships will be based upon need and merit. See Yusuf for more information. The school is for kindergarten through sixth grade its first year, and will add seventh and eighth grades in the following two years. Each classroom will have no more than 18 students, before and after care are optional, as is a hot lunch and school-provided transportation.
In so many ways, we are a loving community of spirit making a difference in the world!
Blessings,
Kathryn Ashera Sprowls
Director, Youth & Family Ministry
