Dear Members and Friends:

We want to tell you about some important, upcoming activities for the congregation.

Our first news is about KISS, the Kampaign to Improve our Sacred Space. KISS 1 was a successful campaign completed this spring to help fund the creation of a kitchen, beautification of our atrium, and several other improvements to the space just outside our sanctuary. We raised over $29,000, a sum beyond our target. Thank you!

When we first conceived of KISS, our plan was to conduct this capital campaign in two phases. Our notion has been that we would initiate each phase of the fundraising when we had a clear idea of what capital improvements were most important for the congregation and how much they cost. As it happens, we discovered in June that the septic system for the Mildred Park building was failing and must be replaced. This significant expenditure was outside of our contingency plans for the year and the Board has concluded it needs to take precedence over other space/capital improvements.

We have done the research on what is needed, so we are announcing the commencement this week of KISS 2, dedicated to raising $50,000 to fund the replacement of the septic system. Our goal is to make this a summer campaign so we have the funds to assure we can complete the job by the time school starts. We have recently learned that we will be able to hook the building to the county sanitation system instead of having to rebuild a septic system. Many congregants (now being listed on our website) contributed to make our internal space improvements a reality. We ask that you give what you can for this important part of our campus infrastructure. While this may seem like a lot of money, we are very pleased to announce that a congregant household has made an anonymous contribution of $20,000 to get us started, so we’re almost halfway there already!

We also want to announce that this summer we will begin a process of envisioning the longer term future for Unity of Fairfax so that we can factor that into our annual plans for activities, space needs and so forth. Much has changed in the last few years and we want to make sure we all have a vision for the future that we can aspire to. Look for further news about this process, which will be designed to engage all in the congregation who have ideas and want to participate.

Thank you for your prayers and contributions to help us continue to make our sacred space beautiful, inspirational and sound. We look forward to this visioning process and to all the fun, inspirational and educational activities being planned for the second half of the year.

Sincerely,

The Board of Trustees

Stacey Guenther, Dave Richardson, Dave Colburn, Roger Heagy, Anita Hartley, Beth English, Catherine Sullivan, Rev. Russell Heiland, Senior Minister
